Verical boring (vertical turning) is a method to create round shapes on components which do not fit in traditional lathes.
A vertical boring mill, also referred to as a vertical lathe, has a table on which the workpiece is placed. Then it is worked from above by a tool on a rotating arm.
The result of vertical boring is lot like the result of conventional turning, but generally the workpiece would not fit in a conventional lathe. It can be because the component is too big, has irregular shapes or shapes that makes it impossible to fix.
With modern CNC-controlled vertical boring mills it is also possible to create irregular shapes, for example elliptical or conical shapes.
Which vertical boring mill that is suitable for each project is usually determined by the component's diameter and height, but also the CNC-control can be important.
Vertical boring is common in many industries, especially the power industry and other industries in which large components exists.
