Gear cutting is various methods of manufacturing gears or toothed components. Gears are normally used for power transmission, change speed and torque, or change rotational direction.
Gears are available in many different kinds; there are at least ten types of common gears. They can appear with different sized teeth and diameters. There is a lot of specifications dealing with the design of each gear, and the specifications are always mentioned on the drawing. Different types of gears have unique advantages such as quiet operation, little friction or efficient transmission. Generally, no type of gears are superior to others, they all have advantages as well as disadvantages.
There are several ways of manufacturing gears; simple gears can be created in milling machines, but there are machine tools used exclusively for gear cutting, for example hobbing machines. For large gears, a broach is typically used.
There are workshops that specialize in gear cutting. They are usually knowledgeable of high precision gears.
